Investing in the future
26 February 2024 Development is an underlying theme in this issue. Not just in terms of new model development from crane manufacturers but rather through companies investing in their future by building new facilities – such as research and development centres and sales and service branches. This theme follows the example discussed in last month's Comment looking at Liebherr's stateof- the-art Development Centre near Ulm, Germany.

Listen and learn
24 January 2024 In my comment last month I wrote about how, on Liebherr's international construction trade press information tour, discussions of the future went hand-in-hand with one of man's oldest traditions: sitting down to eat and communicate together.

Breaking Bread
27 December 2023 A heavy-duty knuckle boom crane used for the most delicate of glazing jobs; a freestanding tower crane installing a wind turbine gantry atop a 157-metre-tall concrete tower; electric 'tow and go' cranes charging from residential homes whilst they work; and mini cranes in the USA – the land where big has traditionally meant better. These are just some of the striking innovations included within this issue; changes shaking up the lifting...

Breathtaking builds
23 October 2023 Sometimes I don't know which is more impressive: the various items of incredible infrastructure being designed and built by engineers and construction companies around the world, or the cranes and transport equipment used to build these feats of modern progress.

A passion for engineering
11 September 2023 "Who wouldn’t want to travel to Italy for an exhibition?" asks Fabio Potestà, director of Mediapoint & Exhibitions, the company responsible for organising the forthcoming GIS 2023 lifting trade show (see News page 18). "We have some of the best scenery, food, and hospitality in the whole world.”

Sustaining the green revolution
17 July 2023 Incredible lifting and transport work is happening all around the world (see page 34 for a snapshot of just some of the awardwinning work being carried out in Europe alone). This issue, however, underscores a recurrent theme that, month on month, is growing in momentum across our industry: sustainability.

Make do and mend
19 June 2023 A pamphlet issued by the British Ministry of Information in the midst of WWII contained the phrase 'make do and mend'. It was designed to provide housewives with useful tips on how to be both frugal and stylish in times of harsh rationing.

Past, present and future…
17 November 2022 Welcome to this very special issue of Cranes Today magazine. Why so special? Well 50 years ago, this month, our first issue was published. All together now...
24 October 2022 The world continues to be a worrying place. Climate change, the cost of living crisis, supply chain disruption, war in Ukraine, and rising gas prices all underpin an uncertain future. As if all that wasn't enough now Queen Elizabeth II has died.

Actions speak louder than words
16 September 2022 In my editor's comment last month I issued a 'call for action' urging crane owners to make their voice heard in demanding more 'green' equipment options. Well, this month, I'm pleased to say there have been some developments...

Looking foward...
22 July 2022 With summer having well and truly arrived here in the UK, it is with a feeling of optimism that I write this month's Comment. It's not just the sunshine that has returned; international travel is back on the agenda, too. With forthcoming Terex and Liebherr trips, plus Bauma 2022 tickets now booked, I'm looking forward to getting away from a desk and meeting people face-to-face again.
