UK-headquartered Babcock International Group last month merged its South African crane plant rental arm with local firm Target Cranes.

The combined business, Babcock Target Plant Services, started operating on June 1, 2012. Target is a mobile crane operator in the Cape region with a fleet of 70 cranes with lifting capacities from 8t to 600USt.

Target distributes throughout Africa, providing turnkey services such as specialist rigging, crane trucks and transport.

Babcock will continue to operate from its headquarters in Jet Park, South Africa, existing branches in Secunda and Middelburg and a new branch in Cape Town, previously Target's headquarters.

The larger and broader crane fleet resulting from the merger is comprised of 132 cranes ranging in capacity from 8t to 600t.

The merger has substantially increased equipment and certification offerings for customers, with crane services extending across a wider geographical reach, Babcock said.
