Sarens Group used a Terex CC 8800-1 crane with fitted with a Boom Booster system to lift 641t distillation column in the Gulf Coast region of the US.

The crane was selected to move the 87m-tall column as it offers a maximum capacity of 1,600t and is designed for world-wide transportation. To complete the lift at a 28m radius, using a 96m main boom length, the crane required the Boom Booster kit developed by Terex to increase the lift capacity of the CC 8800-1.

The Boom Booster features upper and lower adapter segments which enhance the width of the boom almost threefold to 10m, as well as five 10m-long intermediate segments, improving structural integrity and increasing lift capacity by more than 90%.

To lift the distillation column, the crane was configured so that 72m of its 108m boom featured the Boom Booster kit, increasing lift capacities by 5% and thereby providing sufficient capacity and rigging headroom, said Travis Stav, engineering manager at Sarens.

Column winches: a Terex CC 8800-1 was fitted with the Boom Booster system to give it sufficient capacity to lift a distillation column.
