UK heavy transport company Collett has completed the first job for its newly acquired STB 550t girder bridge trailer system, featured in Cranes Today September.

The system successfully completed the collection, transport and delivery of a 156t steel casting from Sheffield Forgemasters International to the Port of Goole on behalf of international freight forwarder Expeditors.

The project required a high level of planning to ensure route suitability, including a motorway lane closure to allow the vehicle to travel eastbound on a westbound carriageway under police escort in order to avoid weak structures.

The girder bridge was accompanied by two four-axle ballast tractors to pull and push the combination while two 10-axle Scheuerle Intercombi modules in two-file configuration facilitated the application of the girder bridge.

Collett's new four-axle power booster module was also used to change the vehicle's traction and pulling power capabilities. The booster has increased Collett's SPMT fleet by 70 axle lines and gives any standard axle module an SPMT capability.

Collett's projects, heavy-lifting and marine divisions combined to provide a full multi-modal logistics solution, including the heavy crane lifting of the steel casting from the girder bridge to a ship and the chartering of the vessel for the onward journey to Antwerp.

The casting will be used to form the drop hammer in a large counter-blow forging press to manufacture titanium forgings.
