Heavy lift shipping operator Jumbo has signed an agreement with Croatian shipyard Brodosplit for an arctic heavy lift vessel equipped with two large offshore cranes, designed for tandem lifting.

The vessel is outfitted with two cranes, each capable of lifting 1,100t at an outreach of 27.5m. When used for tandem lifts, the cranes can lift 2,200t.

The substantial metric tonne rating makes the two cranes, when combined, capable of heavier lifts than many other heavy lift cranes. Jumbo said: “This makes it the strongest heavy lift vessel in the world.”

According to the agreement the vessel will also be built under ice class, to enable operations in arctic areas, and prepared for future DP2 installation. It also includes an option for a second vessel at the Split shipyard.

DP2 vessels allow for installation of mooring systems and other structures on floating production systems.

The additional vessel will expand Jumbo’s fleet to 13 heavy lift vessels ranging from 500–2,200t.

Jumbo expects to deliver the completed vessel in March 2013, and for the vessel to be in operation from June 2013.
