Construction firm Strabag took delivery of a Liebherr 53K tower crane for the Alto Maipo project in Santiago, Chile.

This is the first 53K in the country, according to Henning Köhler, head of tower crane division at Liebherr Chile. The 53K can lift 1,100kg at 40m radius.

The project involves the construction of 2 hydroelectric plants for AES Gener, the ‘El Alfalfal II’ and ‘Las Lajas’ are expected to generate 531MW.

There will 67km of tunnels at a depth of 800m and 17km of high voltage lines. The 53K self-erecting crane is constructing the concrete wall detour of the river.

Kohler said the 53K was chosen because it can be easily moved and erected within the construction site.

Strabag bought directly from Liebherr Chile including erection and a service contract by Liebherr Chile service department.

Strabag also purchased an 85EC-B tower crane for their yard within the site of the same project.

Köhler said there is a total of 37 Liebherr K-Cranes in the market.
