Edinburgh based firm Bernard Hunter Crane Hire has taken delivery of the UK’s first Liebherr LTM 1100-4.2 all-terrain crane.

The four-axle all terrain crane was purchased by the firm to add 100t of lifting capacity in a compact design suitable for the high volume of inner city crane work they take on.

Bernard Hunter’s new acquisition is configured with a 60m main boom and a 19m swing-away fly jib, which can be offset at 0°, 20° or 40° from the main boom, giving a maximum under-hook height of 79m.

Fitted with Liebherr’s LICCON 2 control system and the BTT-Bluetooth display and control terminal, the superstructure functions on the new LTM 1100-4.2 can be controlled remotely.

In addition the outriggers can be activated and positioned using this system, along with engine ignition and speed, and an electronic inclination display supports auto-levelling during setup.

By remotely controlling the hoist winch and luffing ram, the hook block can be remotely attached and detached from the carrier’s bumper.

Bernard Hunter’s director, Jim Rafferty, said: “We chose this particular model because of its build quality and superb technology. Also, the compactness, agility and excellent main boom duties of this crane are ideal for the large amount of inner city work we undertake, where space restrictions are usual and we need to complete lifting contracts swiftly and with minimum site disruption.”

Rafferty’s requirement for quick setup times is met by the ability for the LTM 1100-4.2 to be road legal even with 17.2t of counterweight still attached.

Bernard Hunter’s choice of a Liebherr crane is the result of a 30-year relationship between the companies that has resulted in the firm exclusively using Liebherr mobile cranes in its fleet.

Rafferty adds: “We’ve built up an excellent relationship with Liebherr sales and aftersales personnel over the years, both here in the UK and at their Ehingen factory, and this counts a great deal for us when we make a decision on major investments such as this one”.
