Markle, Indiana-based Smith Erectors has used its new 75USt (70t) 75|RT rough terrain crane to replace a chute at Steel Dynamic’s plant, as part of maintenance operations.

The 75|RT entered one of the buildings on site through a 22ft-tall overhead door and was setup beside an existing hot saw cutting station.

The first step of the operation consisted of removing an old 21,000lb (9,525 kg) chute for the hot saw.  Multiple lifting points were used to move the old chute, which was lodged in place by swarf, remnants of hot steel. In some instances the swarf must be jackhammered or dislodged in order to remove the chute.

Once the old chute was removed a slightly heavier, 31,000lb new chute was lowered back into the same 30ft hole. The new chute was placed at a 35ft radius, with 53ft of boom and four-part line.
