German crane rental and special transport firm Schmidbauer has moved a large transformer through the narrow streets of Wiesbaden, Germany and even tighter passageways of an electricity substation.

Using a six-axle platform trailer combination Schmidbauer delivered a transformer for Regensberg-based manufacturer Starkstrom-Gerätebau from Platz der Deutschen Einheit (Place of German Unification) to an electricity substation. Two mobile cranes were used to lift the 76t transformer onto the Sheuerle trailer, which consisted of a 2-axle InterCombi module and a 4-axle InterCombi PowerBooster unit for the prime mover. Using remote control, Schmidbauer’s operator used the InterCombi PowerBooster’s 60° steering angle to manoeuvre the trailer through the narrow streets and between rows of parked cars on the busy Helenenstrasse. Once at the substation, the trailer was manoeuvred through the entrance and down a tight hallway to the transformer box, something Sheuerle says the rental and transport firm would not have been able to do with a typical self-propelled heavy-duty vehicle. Here, Schmidbauer moved the transformer into its final position by placing rails under its wheels before using wire rope winches to position the unit. Sheuerle says the PowerBooster can be used as an SPMT or easily coupled to conventional InterCombi axles for use as a supporting pusher machine in a trailer combination. In this application its power pack unit automatically activates if the trailer’s speed drops below14km/h, allowing the PowerBooster to assist trailer transport over difficult terrain or roads. The unit is capable of achieving up to 80km/hr.
