Fast erection and safety were a priority for multiple Raimondi tower cranes working on a Qatari residential project.

Qatar-based contractor Urban Trading and Contracting is currently using nine Raimondi flat top tower cranes on the construction of The Seef – a high-profile residential development in the planned city of Lusail, near Doha, Qatar.

Five of the cranes on site (one MRT294, one MRT223, one MRT189, and two MRT144s) were originally sold to Qatari contractor UCC fleet before being resold to Urban Trading and Contracting. The additional four cranes on site are new MRT159s that were sold and installed directly by Raimondi Middle East in January 2020.

According to Raimondi, due to the complex nature of the job site and to avoid collisions between the cranes’ jibs, it undertook a detailed study and held a workshop in conjunction with the UCC project team, engineers, and plant department prior to commencing work.

Jib lengths and hook heights

The MRT159s onsite have jibs ranging between 38 m and 60 m and under hook heights between 74 m to 125 m. The two MRT144s (positioned in different jobsite areas) have 61 m jib configurations and an under hook height of 43 m.

The Raimondi MRT294 has a jib length of 70 m and an under hook height of 133 m. It is the tallest crane currently at work on The Seef job site.

Pre-assembled parts

According to Raimondi, the contractor was looking to install the cranes in a short timeframe and so the MRT159, MRT189, and MRT223 were chosen as they could arrive onsite with all parts preassembled, and embedded elements to facilitate the erection stage. Raimondi’s Operations department deployed four manpower groups to further accelerate this process.

Raimondi supported the jobsite with ongoing service and monthly maintenance. The nine cranes will be dismantled in the upcoming months as the project’s completion is expected to be by the end of the year.
