Taisun, Yantai Raffles Shipyard’s 20,000t gantry crane system, has successfully completed its second commercial lift operation, mating the hull and 12,000t deckbox of Schahin’s new semi-submersible drilling rig, SS Pantanal, and announced its next lift, a 17,000t deckbox for Saipem.

Yantai Raffles said the use of Taisun dramatically cut costs and increased safety, by reducing man-hours during construction of up to two million and bringing construction down to ground level.

SS Pantanal is the first of two semi-submersible drilling rigs Yantai Raffles is delivering to Schahin, and 450 international guests gathered to watch the lift operation. “This is a significant milestone for both Yantai Raffles and Schahin,” said Brian Chang, deputy chairman of Yantai Raffles.

“Yantai Raffles is confident that demand for its products will continue and it will keep on upgrading its facilities to meet clients expectations.”

Taisun’s third commercial lift is due to be its heaviest to date, and will see it mate the hull and 17,000t deckbox of Italian oil and gas company Saipem’s Scarabeo 9 semi-submersible drilling rig.
