A Dutch publishing company has produced a book and DVD film detailing one of the greatest lifting projects of recent years, the October 2001 salvage of the Russian submarine Kursk.
Raising the Kursk was published last month by Bruna and written by Hans Offringa, in close cooperation with Mammoet, the lead contractor on the project.
The first part of the book tells the story of the salvage operation, from the rise and fall of the nuclear submarine, through salvage contract negotiations, the preparations and the actual salvage operation on the Barents Sea, and the final homecoming of the wreckage to the harbour of Murmansk.
The second part gives personal perspectives of some of the people involved, from Holland, Russia and Scotland. Part three offers in-depth technical details of the operation, while part four gives footnotes to the accompanying film on DVD, which contains short interviews and a 35 minute documentary with unique images made during the salvage operation on the Barents Sea. There are also computer animations of the salvage and a photo gallery.
The book is available in both Dutch and English editions and is available, price Euro34.95, at www.mammoetstore.com.
