The company provided the transhipment from a semi low loader to six axles of self-propelled modular transporters (SPMTs) using a 100t mobile crane, Once on the SPMTs the reel was transported the 1.5 mile (2.4km) route through the difficult Lake District terrain.

A full survey of the route was conducted prior to the operation to ensure the successful completion of the project. ALE’s trailers negotiated narrow lanes, extreme gradients and small bridges on route to the offloading location at the edge of Wastwater Lake for installation.

"The Wastwater project was an example of how ALE can provide solutions for small yet complex transportation projects," said Michael Mulvenna, project manager, ALE. "The scope of work itself was small, however due to the gradients and narrow sections of country lane which were often as narrow as 2.5m, the technicalities of manoeuvring a heavy load through these areas was a challenge. To ensure all aspects of the move had been taken into account, and to ensure minimal disruption to the traffic on these lanes our team carried out an in depth route survey which enabled us to complete the project in confidence and in minimal time."
