RAO Norilsk Nickel, the Russian terminal operator at the Arctic port of Dudinka, has bought two Liebherr-Werk Nenzing LHM 250 harbour cranes with a maximum lifting capacity of 64t, and 38m maximum radius to supplement its two existing LHM 250 cranes.

The cranes must operate in temperatures as low as –60 deg C so they steel that has been treated to operate in the severe cold – standard steel would break like glass under such conditions. The cranes also include a special preheating arrangement of the diesel power pack and the hydraulic system, the exchange of various hydraulic components like cylinders and valves, and special operator’s cabins equipped with double glazing – not to forget two extra driven (instead of non-driven) axle sets to move the crane up a steep ramp when the water levels rise in spring time.

The hand-over ceremony was attended by Liebherr-Werk Nenzing managing director Walter Lange who heard how the four mobiles will play a key role in the trade routes to the near-by regional capital of Norilsk.
