Lighten the load

Palfinger’s PK 165.002 TEC 7 will debut at ConExpo, stand G4444.

Designed for carrier vehicles with a maximum permitted total weight of 32t, the PK 165.002 TEC 7 enters a new dimension in terms of weight reduction. It combines strength with wide reach and still manages to be a ton lighter than its previous model, the PK 150.002.

“Our goal was to develop a crane that was designed for heavy loads and high reach capacities while reducing the weight at the same time,” explains Gerald Pschernig, managing director of Palfinger’s cranes business unit.

The crane reaches a lifting capacity that is up to 15% higher than its predecessor, and it increases by more than 20% at the fly jib.

The greatest challenge was to optimise this crane for a 32t carrier vehicle, but the PK 165.002 TEC 7 does this, even with full equipment, including the fly jib and winch.

For the North American market, the new crane offers tremendous advantages and industry leading technologies, says Greg Sneek, product manager at Palfinger North America. The new model allows installation on Class 8 chassis, and, when fully equipped with fly-jib and winch, has a total weight of less than 80,000lb.

This weight saving reduces the need for special permits to transport the truck throughout areas in North America. It also pays off for users: acquisition and operating costs, as well as efficiency, are optimised by the qualification as a standard truck. This means restrictions on routes or accompanying vehicles are not an issue.

The PK 165.002 TEC 7 shows its strengths with heavy loads, for example, those that have to be lifted across large distances. The new model has a lifting capacity of 125t.

The maximum lifting capacity with the fly jib is 8.2t, instead of the previous 6.5t. With the PJ 240, the PK 165.002 TEC 7 reaches a maximum lifting height of 35m, increasing to 40m with the PJ 300L.

Power Link Plus optimses the PK 165.002 TEC 7 for difficult application areas. The knuckle boom system enables an overextension of 15°. This point can prove decisive, for example, when lifting heavy loads through a low gate opening into a building.

Palfinger also highlights the PK 165.002 TEC 7’s modern and functional design. The boom system with the P-Profile increases the stiffness of the crane boom and contributes substantially to the lightweight construction.

The completely redesigned slew mechanism and extension system are executed in a maintenance optimised style. The sensors, hydraulics and electronics of the crane are installed in such a way that all components have the best protection against mechanical and weather-related influences.
