Florida, US based Crane Rental Corporation (CRC) has employed its 500 US t capacity gantry system to move a 400,000lbs (200 US t) electricity transformer from Stanton Energy Center in east Orlando to Progress Energy Florida’s new Tanner Road substation.

The gantry system was employed at both sites to lift and position the transformer. For the actual move, CRC used a Oshkosh Prime Mover and a line of 12 Goldhofer hydraulic platform trailers configured side-by-side to carry the load 11 miles to its new home.

Transportation was carried out at night to minimise disruption, with the load taking up most of two traffic lanes.

The transformer will be moved again once its final foundations have been built at the Tanner Road site.
