Manitowoc launches latest all terrain

Manitowoc has launched its latest Grove all terrain crane, with the strongest reach and load chart of any five-axle crane, says the company.

The 250t Grove GMK5250L is a long boom crane -- designated by the 'L' in the model title -- with a 70m main boom that includes Grove's Megaform shaping for better strength and stability. A 21m hydraulic swing-away jib enhances overall reach, and offers increased offset of 50º compared to 40º on other Grove cranes in its class.

It is the first crane to feature a VIAB turbo clutch and integrated retarder, said to improve manoeuvrability and driver comfort by eliminating both fluid overheating and clutch burning, while enabling wear-free starting and braking.

The VIAB system also contributes to fuel savings -- on the GMK5250L fuel consumption is approximately 30% below that of its predecessor, the GMK5220.

The GMK5250L also incorporates the new Boom Configurator Mode, which calculates the optimum boom configuration for each combination of lift parameters, and Manitowoc's Crane Control System (CCS), a user-friendly interface now included in all of the manufacturer's all terrain, crawler, rough terrain, truck and tower cranes.

The Grove Megatrak suspension system, and all-wheel steer system, improves movement while on the job site, and the crane is capable of moving with its full counterweight of 80t.

The crane, manufactured at Manitowoc's facility at Wilhelmshaven, Germany, is powered by a single engine, a Tier IV/EUROMOT 4 Mercedes-Benz OM471LA six-cylinder diesel engine.

"Customer return on investment has been the key driver in the development of this ground-breaking machine," said Jens Ennen, senior vice president all-terrain and truck cranes at Manitowoc. "To create a highly versatile crane that is suited to job sites around the world, it was important for us to focus on specifications and load-charts."
