Buenos Aires Container Terminal Services SA (BACTSSA) has modified two RTGs operating at the Port of Buenos Aires, as it prepares for increasing annual TEU movements through the port.

Cargotec Argentina was brought in to carry out the modification work on the two Kalmar cranes, undertaking structural and mechanical work, with the RTGs’ lifting capacity increased from one over four to one over five containers high.

To meet the specification of the modification, Cargotec Argentina installed column extensions to increase column lengths by 2.9m.

BACTSSA has been operating at the Port of Buenos Aires since 1994 and handles more than 300,000 TEU annually.

“When container handling capacity has to be increased quickly and cost efficiently, modification is a good solution, particularly when the customer has quality cranes already installed,” said Marcelo Massa, managing director of Cargotec Argentina.

“By extending the container stacking height, capacity can be increased considerably without taking up more space in the terminal.”

The September edition of Cranes Today includes a look at the dockside and gantry crane market.
