Edwards Moving & Rigging has transported two turbines and generators from a barge to a power plant in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA.

The large power plant components weighed 317t – 430t (698,865lbs – 947,988lbs) and the distance that had to be covered was approximately 12 miles (19km).

The big challenge with this transport was the part on the highway where height restrictions of 18ft (5.5m) had to be considered. Edwards decided to use its Goldhofer Faktor 5 high girder bridge and heavy-duty modules from the same manufacturer to overcome this challenge.

The use of the Faktor 5 made it possible to hang up the transformers and the generators between the module combinations in the front and in the rear so that they could pass under the bridges without any problems. With a vertical stroke of 5.9ft (1.8m), the transport team was also able to clear any roadside obstacles on the route.

Edwards placed the girder frame on 2x18-axle side-by-side combinations. The total gross weight of the transport was 856t, the overall length was just under 102m, the width was 6.3m and the height was 5.3m.

“With this equipment and our highly experienced team, handling this transport was almost a routine job for us,” said Tobias Epple, director business development Europe at Edwards.
