German company SCHOLPP Kran & Transport has replaced a mobile communications antenna on the extension roof of the Rosengarten Congress Centre in Mannheim, Germany, using a Liebherr MK 140-5.1E construction crane.
The operation, conducted at a reach of 64.2m, was carried out to allow continued use of the venue for events in the city centre without significant noise disruption.
According to SCHOLPP, the crane operated in luffing jib mode and used its full 13.3t counterweight to complete the precise installation of the equipment on the roof.
SCHOLPP Mannheim branch manager Florian Schmid said: “For this job, I opted for the MK 140-5.1 mobile construction crane. Alternatively, a 350t mobile crane could have been used, but to achieve the required reach, we would have had to fit a luffing jib. This solution would have been considerably more expensive for our client.”
The Liebherr MK 140-5.1E, a five-axle crane, is described by Liebherr as achieving performance figures typically associated with larger crane classes, featuring quick setup and flexible operation.
Its Vario Jib technology allows rapid conversion from trolley jib to luffing jib mode, enabling a hook height up to 94.4m and a maximum reach of 65m with a tip load of 1t.
SCHOLPP indicated that the all-electric drive and winch system enabled emission-free and low-noise lifting, benefiting the surrounding area and allowing uninterrupted events at the Rosengarten Congress Centre and nearby hotels.
The crane includes a vertical telescopic tower and variable boom angles to assist operations near buildings, while its height-adjustable cab provides visibility during confined lifts.
Last month, four Liebherr 85 EC-B tower cranes were used for a climate research project above Brazil’s Amazon rainforest, giving scientists access to the forest canopy at heights of more than 45m.
