Three Liebherr flat-top cranes are supporting the redevelopment of two early 20th-century gasometers in Milan’s Bovisa district, which are being transformed into an innovation campus for the Politecnico di Milano.

The cranes, in operation since March 2025, are responsible for lifting and material handling across the site.

The construction, designated as the Politecnico di Milano, Campus Bovisa-Goccia-Gasometri project, began in October 2023 and is scheduled for completion in early 2027.

It is described as one of Milan’s largest urban redevelopment efforts, transforming the former gas storage structures into buildings of eight and six storeys.

These buildings will contain offices, a gym, laboratories, and other university facilities.

The redevelopment work involves partially dismantling, restoring offsite, and reassembling one of the gasometers, while restoring the second structure in place.

Main contractor CMSA Società Cooperativa is leading the works as part of a consortium named ATI Conscoop, Consorzio Integra, with other partners including Gianni Benvenuto and Pentagas.

Liebherr’s involvement is managed through its dealer Niederstätter, which specialises in the supply and rental of construction machinery.

Niederstätter worked with CMSA from the early planning stages to develop solutions tailored to the site’s requirements, focusing on crane capabilities and logistics.

The central aim was to provide cranes with the ability to lift loads of up to 3t and to cover the entire construction area.

The three cranes selected, a 205 EC-B with a 50m hook height and 60m jib, a 250 EC-B reaching 80m with a 70m jib, and a 240 EC-B with 65m hook height and 68m jib, were erected on site from 17 March 2025.

This configuration was designed to enable comprehensive reach across the site for lifting and assembling steel structures and facades, as well as concreting work.

Niederstätter’s contribution extended to the design and assembly of a two-storey modular building for project offices and facilities, measuring 36.5m by 7.35m. The support included coordination for crane positioning and logistics planning.

Liebherr Tower Crane Solutions also provided assistance with tower system combinations and foundation load calculations.

The Bovisa-Goccia-Gasometri masterplan links the campus to a new public park, aiming to establish the area as an innovation district. The original steel gasometer structures are being restored as part of the project, integrating industrial heritage with the new campus facilities.

The three Liebherr EC-B cranes are expected to remain on site until the anticipated completion date in early 2027.
