The HK 70 was designed by Tadano Faun at Mammoet’s request. Mammoet has ordered 15 cranes mounted on four-axle trucks, and 10 mounted on five-axle trucks. The five-axle versions of the truck were adapted from standard four-axle trucks.

Mercedes Benz Nederlands, which supervised the order, explained that the trucks were adapted from four-axle Actros type 4146 8×4 trucks, with Euro 5 engines. The front two 9-ton axles are steered and driven by a 334kW / 456 hp 12 litre V6 power source. At Mercedes-Benz Nederland’s request, Paul Nutzfahrzeuge GmbH equipped all these vehicles with a 12-ton, electro-hydraulically steered tag axle which increases the GVW to 54 tons. In order to make room for the fifth axle on the Actros, the chassis was extended. In addition, the fuel tanks, batteries and air boilers in the chassis were moved. Because the telescoping crane extends over the cabin, a low sleeping cabin was chosen.
