He told the Wigan, UK Evening Post: “I am heavily involved in raising money for the Prince’s Trust [another charity] in the North West and we recently sold our crane business for £250m. You have to put a little bit back.”

Ainscough, who still owns Ainscough Training Services and machinery moving business Ainscough Vanguard, spent the money to arrange a concert with pop stars Katie Melua and Aled Jones.

“I can raise this money for Children in Need and then use the event to raise another £250,000 for the Prince’s Trust,” he said.

The donation was the charity’s largest ever single bid.
