The Bristol Bulldog is a clamping device developed by Lifting Gear Hire (LGH) of the UK in response to a problem facing contractor Brent Engineering in fitting concrete box section culverts.

Brent had a contract to install 200 culvert sections as part of a flood alleviation scheme in Cornwall. For 400m the culvert followed the route of a winding river, preventing traditional anchoring and pulling methods being used.

The contractor needed a method of delivering a steady 8t force, with “steerability” to allow the river course to be followed. The pulling force also had to be delivered near the mouth of the box section as anchorage could not be made at either end of the developing culvert.

The Bristol Bulldog was delivered as a concept within a week of the problem being brought to LGH. The final product was designed, manufactured, tested and delivered within three weeks and worked first time.

It works by bracing itself to the strongest part of the culvert, adjusts to fit any size of culvert, and is easier than traditional anchoring to rig and de-rig, it is claimed.

LGH, which has patented the product, reckons that the robustness and simplicity of the Bristol Bulldog make it ideal for the hire market. The company says that culvert manufacturer Tarmac has recommended the product to its customers.
