At the same time, we bought a Tadano Faun GT 700 E and brought in Barry Riley as operations manager. We run the cranes as a separate business within Hall Brothers Transport. We do demolitions, major construction and building, and a lot of work lifting concrete panels for building work, which keeps our trucks busy most the time, around Otago.
When we were planning on buying, we had a look around for a second-hand crane, but couldn’t find what we wanted. The Tadano Faun fitted on price, and Barry had driven one before. Now we’ve had the 70t GT 700 E, we’re looking at getting a new 55-tonner, the GT 550. As the concrete panels we lift are getting bigger, we wanted something to fill the gap between the 30t P&H and the 70t Tadano Faun. We’ve seen bigger companies trying to squeeze us out. That’s another reason why we needed the 70t.
“Barry goes down to the firms we work with, to train the staff in signals and handling the panels, so they know what we want and what we can do. There’s about 100,000 people in Dunedin—most people know everyone there, so if you get a good rep, people come to you. “
