Offering hands-on experience of new equipment is the emphasis of the International Construction & Utility Equipment Exposition (ICUEE). The show is billed as an event where visitors can ‘get into the equipment and push some dirt’, under site conditions, in the outdoor demonstration area.

More than 800 exhibitors are claimed for the show in Louisville, Kentucky USA, that is expected to draw upwards of 15,000 visitors from across the USA and 53 other countries. It covers more than 1.5 million square feet of exhibition area, indoors and out, and there is also a seminar programme.

The Kentucky Fair and Exposition Centre is less than five minutes from the airport and close to hotels from which there is a free shuttle bus service for the show. This year, the 16th show since the first one in 1964, takes place from 25 to 27 September.

Braden Winch 1835

A supplier of winch and hoist products to the utility industry, Braden is giving visitors the opportunity for hands on examination of its latest innovations for both the utility and construction industries. These include:

1. The PCD24B Capstan Drive bumper, designed for utility trucks that don’t require a winch, but need the benefits of a planetary capstan drive.

2. Hydraulic planetary hoist PD12C with better spooling systems to increase wire rope life and reduce downtime caused by wire rope spooling problems.

3. The unveiling of the SD series swing drive range. These new designs combine Braden’s 77 years of winch and drive system experience with the latest in power transmission technology, according to the company.

Other products including the proven PD18B bumper, the compact WR30 gearbox and the BR30B turret winch will also be on display.

Cormach Crane Sales-USA N547

One of the cranes exhibited is Cormach’s 27,500 E folding truck mounted model. Favelle Favco Cranes (USA), Inc. N313

The Favco 40T crawler crane for power line and utility contractors will be shown. Favco crawler cranes use a Caterpillar excavator power module lower works and the telescopic boom models incorporate the long boom technology of the Manitowoc Boom Truck line.

Telescopic Favco crawlers are claimed to have the longest reach in the industry. The Favco 30T, rated at 30 ton (27t) has a 92ft (28m) main boom and an optional 20ft or 26ft to 46ft non-offsetable telescopic jib for a tip height up to 144ft (44m). Rated at 40 ton, the Favco 40T has a 100ft main boom and an optional 30.5ft to 55ft non-offsetable, telescopic jib giving a maximum tip height of 161ft.

Claimed as a first for the crane industry is the allowance for up to 5° out-of-level lifting while still under the monitoring of the crane’s LMI system. Optional equipment includes augers, auxiliary hydraulic tool circuits, pole grabs and man baskets.

Fischer Crane & Machinery International N511

On display will be nine articulating crane models from Italian manufacturer Copma2000, from the smallest, 30.2 to the 280.3J3 and 280.6 with radio remote control. They are aimed at standard and special applications in the truck, stationary and marine industries. Getting its first showing is the 280.3J3 with an oversize jib which is specifically aimed at the form handling and utility industry. The standard 380 jib has been fitted on the 280.3 to provide more than 1,700lb (771kg) capacity at 60ft (18.3m) of horizontal reach.

Grove (see National Crane)

The YB4415 industrial crane will be shown as well as aerial work platform models A60J articulating boom and T86J telescopic boom.

Manitowoc N128

Boom trucks are the mainstay of Manitowoc’s showing but there is also a self erecting tower crane from recently acquired French tower crane manufacturer Potain. The Potain HD 40 appears along with six boom trucks: models 1770C, 22101C, 2794C, 2892SX, 30124C and 38124S; the full range of rough terrain portable forklifts; and a trolley boom truck unloader.

MICO Incorporated 535

A new spring applied, hydraulic release, wheel mount multiple disc brake will be shown. This brake is ideal for scissor lift applications because of its compact design and high radial loading capacity, MICO claims. It can be used for limited service braking, parking and emergency braking.

The design allows direct mounting of the brake to the wheel, eliminating the need for an adaptor and reducing costs. It is also a sealed design for reduced maintenance, long life and consistent holding in rugged conditions.

A holding torque is generated whenever hydraulic drive pressures drop or become inoperative. Although it is rated at 3,000psi pressure capacity (4,000psi intermittent), the brake needs less than 400psi to operate normally. Low release pressures make it ideal for use in a closed-loop hydrostatic system, MICO says.

National Crane Corporation

L212, L311, L111

Six telescoping models and three articulating cranes are on display. These include the 456B, 685D Auger, 9103A, 11105, 15103 and 18142 telescoping cranes, along with the N80A, N160 and N325 articulating cranes.

With the addition of the lift, the units offer working heights of 52ft6in (16m) on the TL37M and 56ft (17m) for the TL41M.

Waco Boom Company N117

Developments in insulated composite boom technology are on show. Advances in the manufacturing process include new options added to the filament winding heads which provides more angle possibilities in the layers of reinforcement. More angles equal a wider variety of strength applications.

Waco has increased the number of booms produced with moulded outside surfaces which greatly improves the strength to weight ratio. This is made for insertion to the inside of the metal boom portion for either static joints or telescopic applications. The metal overlap application means greater strength and stiffness for the machine overall. The moulding process is also ideal for superior jibs.

A number of different sizes of upper booms, lower booms and jibs have been added to the range and are now available for new equipment development.
