Swedish interior designer Charlie Davidson is hoping his latest product design for a cantilevered lamp will appeal to a wide audience, including crane enthusiasts, having modeled its design on a Terex CC 8800 crawler crane.

His latest work has already been exhibited at the Milan Furniture Fair and was initially inspired by the popular Arco Floor lamp, designed in 1962 by Achille Castiglioni and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni.

Its designer says that although he has already had good feedback from Crane model builder Conrad, he is looking to appeal to a wider range of buyers.

He says: "I’m really looking for high-end business men with a taste for well designed, and interestingly designed pieces."

Already he has had one such buyer for the piece, based in Miami.

Earlier in his career, Davidson had worked for possibly the construction industry’s favourite toy manufacturer, Lego, and having one day discovered a scale model of a mobile crane sitting on a shelf and, remembering the arco lamp, the designer soon put the two sources of inspiration together to come up with his latest piece de resistance. The finished product is itself a 1:50 scale model of a Terex CC 8800 crawler crane, with a height of 2.1, and an out reach of 1.5m, although at the end of the crane jib instead of a hook block, Davidson decided on the appearance of an industrial electromagnet holding a collection of glass tubes to form the lighting elements. Although relatively simple to assemble, Davidson says he is working on simplifying the lamp’s assembly to ensure even the least technically minded buyers can put it together effortlessly. The crane currently fetches €3,000 and is available through the designer’s website www.charlie-davidson.com
