The only way to get a really large crane on the road is to pull the boom, which can weigh anything from 60,000 lbs (27t) to 90,000 lbs (41t),” says Nelson Manufacturing owner Bob Luttfring. “It’s because the market is booming. A lot of these guys are buying bigger cranes,” he adds. He said that Nelson has sold it to fit cranes ranging from a 240 US ton Grove in Florida to a 700 US ton capacity Demag in Texas.

Two assist cranes could do that job, but the Nelson trailer does it all on its own. It includes hydraulic cylinders at both ends of the boom to fit it to the crane body. He said that customers can specify the trailer to lift the boom of more than one model of crane, provided the cranes are from the same manufacturer.

The majority of trailers sold come with three axles, and would require overwidth, over weight and most likely overlength permits.
