PEC-Tech is itself a contractor that has built power stations, chemical plants and other heavy industrial facilities. PTSI has a total of 190 employees working across Indonesia, not including workshops, and seven depots. Our prime focus is to support internal group projects, however during periods of lower expansion we work for companies such as MCTN Chevron, Caltex, and Pertamina across the Indonesian archipelago.
We always hire cranes with riggers and operators and do preventative maintenance. We are the first Indonesian crane rental company to be Lloyds Registered ISO 9001-2000.
Crawler cranes are still a major option for rental work. We have 15. Even the smaller ranges, 35t–50t, are common in the oil industry mainly due to ground conditions. In January 2007 we purchased a 500t-capacity Terex-Demag CC 2500, the largest Indonesian-owned crawler.
We have bought two 100-ton crawlers from [Chinese manufacturer] Sany. The track shoes, castings and pin connections need improvement, but generally we are confident that the machines will perform to expectation. We are also happy with the price, of course. The cranes are supported by Mobile Cranes Asia out of Singapore, which is only 80km (50mi) from us here in Sumatra. We also run five Favelle Favco tower cranes, from 20t to 100t capacity. We see opportunities for them in the power industry; there are several new power stations planned in Indonesia. We also have 21 all-terrains and nine RTs.
It may be unusual to have many different types of cranes but we need to have the right mix of equipment to support our business. In our diverse and often-remote geographical location we are very self-sufficient. As long as the crews are well trained, it is horses for courses. We have more than 60 courses for operators and riggers. Our procedures help to provide a high guarantee of safety and peace of mind for the customer, although, I think all of us in the industry know, it’s never enough. Complacency is always there. Vigilance in systems and constant awareness of risk bring long-term results.
