The WK 5015 cranes were used to erect the two pylons 64m and 90m high for the new aerial tramway.

The crane components were first transported by saddle truck to the nearby town of Fimbatal. Then a heavy lift helicopter from Heliswiss International with a 5t lifting capacity took the crane sections to the jobsite. To avoid exceeding maximum load limits the crane components had to be disassembled into their individual parts.

To ensure stability in extreme weather conditions the crane was bolted onto 6.5m by 6.5m foundation platforms, which were cast in concrete on-site, with foundation anchors.

The helicopter moved approximately 200t of crane parts through the air. Six Wolffkran crane technicians and the Heliswiss crew assembled the cranes in a total time of four days.

Wolffkran said that asssembly was made quicker by the WK 5015’s patented pin connection, which allows tower sections to be assembled and dismantled without any special tools.

The new Piz Val Gronda E5 aerial tramway is scheduled to start transporting visitors during the winter 2013 season.
