Welcome to this very special issue of Cranes Today magazine. Why so special? Well 50 years ago, this month, our first issue was published. To mark the occasion, our golden anniversary, we’ve pulled out all the stops and published our largest ever issue. In addition, we’ve gone to print slightly early than usual to benefit from maximum exposure at the long-awaited Bauma trade show in Munich, Germany. Check our updated Bauma guide on to learn about the latest industry offerings that will be on show there.

A golden anniversary is a joyous occasion and to mark it we have explored the past, the present, and the future. To mark the past we commissioned long-time Cranes Today contributor and all-round crane authority Stuart Anderson to write an ‘evolution of the industry’ article exploring milestones in the development of modern mobile and tower cranes. As you can imagine, it’s an epic, covering 16 pages of the magazine.

We also reached out to some of our past editors for their memories of on working on the magazine and writing about the industry. As part of this, we also have a lovely article from long time reader Dirk Knoester, senior advisor at Mammoet who started reading the magazine in 1974!

Celebrating 50 years certainly helps put industry developments into perspective; but where might we be heading over the next 50 years? To explore this idea we approached a number of key industry players to find out what their vision of the future holds. Find what Liebherr, Link-Belt, Mammoet, Tadano, Sarens and ESTA are focussing on for the future. We hope you enjoy this 'golden' issue.
