ABB of Finland supplies AC drives to MAN Wolffkran for its 7532 FL, a 270tm saddle jib tower crane whose first model was sold in February. ABB supplies its ACS800-01 drive for hoisting, slewing and trolleying motions, though each has different software implementations. Similar hardware simplifies start-up, operations, maintenance and spare parts ordering.

Hoist motor power is 45-75kW, Slewing is 2x6kW and trolleying is 9kW.

Software in the hoist drive, for example, controls the brake, optimises the maximum speed, and other functions. Software in the slewing drive counteracts the tendency of the tower to vibrate.

‘Having a DC-bus connection where one big hoist unit feeds the smaller inverters for trolley and slewing provides the advantage of needing only one brake unit and brake resistor,’ said Andreas Wagner, MAN Wolffkran chief electrical engineer.
