For some years the FMCEC had a separate Cranes and Excavators Group headed by Alan. When I first became active in the industry, in 1983, he occupied this role until a subsequent re-organisation. Over many years he served a variety of Trade Associations with distinction. By his example of calm, thoughtful and dignified service, he taught both myself and other colleagues a great deal.
Early in his tenure there were a number of major UK manufacturers in the sector which have now largely disappeared. These included Coles Cranes, Jones Cranes, Stothert & Pitt, Priestman and RB. Alan was a qualified accountant and Chartered Secretary by training.
