Amquip, one of the largest mobile crane rental companies in the USA, is investing $60m in tower cranes over the next two years to become a major player in that segment too.

At the Conexpo show in March both Potain and Terex-Peiner announced that they had received an order worth $30m from Amquip.

The Terex order includes Peiner SK 315, SK 415 and SK 575 saddle jib models – 52 units in total. The SK 575 is Peiner’s largest model, with a maximum capacity of 32t and a maximum free standing hook height of 75.8m. At the end of its 80m jib it can lift a maximum of 3.9t.

Potain gave no details of models or quantity.

According to the Cranes Today Fleet File 2004, Amquip’s investment will make it the USA’s second largest owner of tower cranes, behind only Morrow, the Liebherr distributor that owns more than 400 top-slewing tower cranes. Other major tower crane rental companies include Lewis Equipment and Maxim Crane Works, who each have about 80 units.
