Scottish company IMES Group has bought Davy Weighing Systems from the Kvaerner Group, just a month after acquiring a specialist inspection company.

IMES is active in a range of support services to the lifting industry as well as in the oil and gas and defence industries. Its subsidiaries include the load testing specialist Water Weights. Most recently, in December 2000, it acquired Buchan Inspection Services.

Davy Weighing Systems (DWS) will be run as an operating division of IMES. Its acquisition takes IMES Group’s annualised turnover close to £8m ($12m) and the number of employees to more than 110, doubling the staff numbers in the last three years.

Founded 40 years ago, DWS was one of the first companies to offer large capacity strain gauged load cells for use in industrial applications. Today it designs, supplies and services high performance industrial process weighing and control systems and force measurement systems and equipment. IMES believes that this will complement the services already offered by IMES in monitoring and measurement, and data gathering.

IMES Group chief executive Melfort Campbell commented: “This second acquisition keeps IMES Group on target for its future growth and development. Our track record in adapting and expanding our skills into new markets has been demonstrated with the winning of significant contracts such as the engineering support services to the Trident Strategic Weapon System at Faslane for the [UK] Ministry of Defence. Our focus is on developing leading edge technologies and the enhancement of new and existing products and services enabling us to deliver more knowledge based solutions.” DWS sales manager Martin Davey said: “Joining IMES Ltd is an exciting step for DWS. It will enable us to expand the services and products offered to our existing clients, develop new markets and support IMES in its ambitions to continue to grow and diversify into new sectors and geographical markets.” The IMES Group of Companies, was founded in 1985 by Melfort Campbell and operates in Europe and the USA, with additional representative offices throughout South America, Africa, the Middle and Asia.
