The two killed were Donald C. Leo and Ramadan Kurtaj. It was the second such accident in three months.
New York City acting buildings commissioner Robert LiMandri, who said he was “deeply troubled” by the collapse, temporarily suspended tower crane erection, dismantling and jumping operations in New York City, and called for an emergency meeting with industry. He added that there is no reason to conclude the cause was the same as the March 15 crash.
“As the Department conducts its investigation into the cause of today’s tragic accident, forensic experts will be focusing on a particular weld that failed and will be fully examining the crane model – Kodiak – which is no longer in production.”
