US engineer McDermott International is facing a $12m to $15m bill to repair or replace a barge mounted crane.
According to a Form 8-K filed with the US Securities & Exchange Commission, the crane on the DB60 derrick barge broke down on 11 July while the barge was preparing for regularly scheduled maintenance. The barge belongs to subsidiary J Ray McDermott SA. No further details of the incident were given except that no one was injured. An investigation into the cause of the breakdown was being conducted.
McDermott said that the total cost to repair or replace the crane was estimated at between $12m and $15m. Insurance would cover all but about $4m of the cost. Repair would take three to four months, while replacement could take up to six months depending on availability of a replacement.
