The Riverdance roll-on roll-off truck ferry, en route from Ireland, beached off the shore of northern England in February.

General Contractor Hancock’s Contractors won a public tender for the work from boat owner Seatrucks. It sub-contracted the work to PGC Demolition. PGC’s workers are using aerial work platforms and cutting gear to chop up the boat, and works with Winterlift for cranes to lift the larger pieces.

Winterlift’s mobile lifted out the two engines over two recent weekends. The crane lifted the load at about 15m radius.

“The biggest problem is the tide, which comes back in quickly,” said managing director of PGC Peter Cordwell.

He said that the damp sand compacts into a hard surface, which makes it good for crane work.

The teams have a window of 4.5 hours to work when the tide is out.
