Heavy haulage company Berard Transportation of Lousiana, USA recently transported two 1,700t double-walled ships measuring 90m (300ft) long, 18m (60ft) and 10m (30ft) high.

Berard used 72 axle lines of Goldhofer heavy-duty trailers in two 36-axle lines. Among the axle lines were self-propelled modules with electronic multi-way steering type PST/SL-E and conventional heavy-duty modules type THP/SL with mechanical steering.

Both ships were moved in the Conrad shipyard, Amelia, Lousiana. It took six days for the assembled modules to load and transport the ships.

One tank ship, weighing 1680t, was loaded using the trailers’ 600mm stroke of hydraulic axle compensation. Then the 1960t convoy rolled on 576 tires from the dockyard on the quay to the dry dock where the ship was launched. Transported by a barge, the 72 axle lines then went to the adjoining port which is 16 km away. Here another 1700-ton tank ship was moved the same way.

The company owns more than 70 axle lines, and has ordered more. Berard Transportation was founded in 1945, when the sugar cane farmer Roy Berard was offered its first transportation order. “We feel at home in all transport sectors such as offshore, energy, petrochemicals including the shipyard field,” says technical manager Braedon Berard. “Nothing is impossible for us but we must be able to fully rely on our team and especially on our equipment.”
