The initial contract is for erecting two 5MW REpower Demonstrator units, for which the Kobelco crane is equipped with 48m main boom and 30m luffing jib, to lift the complete 128t hub and three-blade assemblies to a height of 65m – the height of the main generator mounting flange. Each blade alone is over 61m long and weighs 20t, and the swept diameter is 126m.
The complete unit weighs 468t, and is currently the largest offshore generator in the world. If the first two demonstrator units prove satisfactory and reliable over a two year trial period, it could lead to a further 200 or more similar units being installed offshore on the site of a working oil rig in the Beatrice Oil Field, 16 miles (25 km) offshore in the North Sea.
