In total, more than 40,000 tonnes of plant components had to be transported from the port to the refinery site approximately 18 kilometres away in Jamnagar, in the western state of Gujarat. These were reactors, splitters and vacuum containers, weighing between 600 and 1,600 tonnes. The individual components for the refinery were produced in Italy, Korea and Japan and brought by sea to the port close to Jamnagar.
There, the SPMTs took on the heavy and valuable loads. On the way to JERP, they had to overcome obstacles such as level crossings and tight bends. Absolute reliability was a necessity, particularly for crossing the main train lines on the western side.
The SPMTs’ electronic multi-directional steering, 700mm axle adjustment, broad tread tyres and power pack units helped make the moves easier than they would have been.
