The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA), Boston, USA, and the Mass Transit Railway (MTR), Hong Kong, have both invested in units of the PK700T crane from Palfinger Railway, the rail division of Palfinger Group. The compact crane is designed for maintenance work in rail tunnels and subways and can lift and move entire track segments weighing up to 6.5 tons.

The units being supplied to the MBTA are pivoting electric units that can work fully emissions-free. The first unit will be delivered to Boston in autumn 2024 with the others following in 2025.Palfinger says it is looking to increase market share and become a market leader in North American market over the next five years across all its product segments.

The models for the MTR are pivoting diesel hydraulic power systems. They will be used to carry out track maintenance and track renewal work on the DUAT part of the city’s public transport network. The units are expected to be delivered at the end of 2023.

The pivoting electric units enable completely emission-free operation and therefore contribute to sustainable maintenance work. The first unit will be delivered to Boston in fall 2024, with the others following in 2025.
