The regeneration division of KCI Carruthers of Scotland has begun a project to modernise two luffing jib cranes at the Immingham Terminal owned by Associated British Ports.

The cranes, which were built in the early 1960s, are to have a change of use to load out sugar.

As well as getting a general mechanical and structural overhaul, all electrical controls and cabin fittings are being replaced with KCI’s Dyna Invertor and variable speed controls.

The contract, worth £500,000 ($800,000), is expected to give the cranes at least another 10 years working life. Work began in January and is scheduled to take 36 weeks.

Carruthers’ regeneration division, set up two years ago, reports that, after a slow start, orders are now coming “thick and fast”.
