The two 500t capacity cranes were chosen in order to meet the required lifting radius of the job, which saw the cranes positioned up to 15m away from the mill’s final position.
The LTM 1500-8.1 is equipped with an 84m telescopic boom and the AC 500 with a 56m telescopic boom, although only two sections of the boom of the LTM 1500-8.1 were telescoped.
Lifting contractor Felbermayr’s Gabriel Puscoiu explains the job couldn’t be completed with smaller cranes: “The maximum radius was 16m, and each crane had around 90t on the hook.”
Puscoiu added high-quality lashing equipment was specified in order to minimise the risk of damage and scraping on the surface of the cement mill.
The 16.6m-long mill was transported from Belgium to its new home in Romania with the assistance of Abnormal Load Services’ (ALS) Dutch and Romania operations. This included the use of a modular trailer, a barge and a ro-ro barge to move the massive piece from one country to the other.
