Mammoet was subcontracted by Jacobs Engineering Group to assist with the reverse modularisation of the Geismar 2 plant, as well as with heavy lifting, hauling and transport.
Methanex made the decision to relocate the plant from Chile to Louisiana — a distance of 5,450 miles — in 2013, to reduce cost and set-up time compared to building a new plant.
The plant components, which had a combined weight of 183,556t, were prepared by Mammoet prior to transport to withstand the harsh environmental conditions during the journey. These included loading and sea fastening in the Magellan Strait, and heavy transport over roads and bridges in Louisiana.
