ConExpo Asia is to be included in Bauma China in 2010, which takes place from 23-26 November, 2010 at the Shanghai New International Expo Centre.

Terex’s chairman and CEO Ron DeFeo and chief marketing officer Katia Facchetti have previously voiced their concerns that there are too many trade shows for the industry to sustain, with Facchetti having said: “I am appalled by the time, resources and cost that goes into trade shows in this industry. There are too many shows. For the massive cross industry shows, one per continent would be the best use of resources.”

DeFeo said: “We are quickly reaching the saturation point for expense and return with trade shows globally. Terex believes there should be three major global shows, alternating between Asia, Europe and the Americas.”

Bauma China has also faced criticism in the past for not giving a share of the profits generated by the show back to a trade association. Facchetti said: “Shows are best owned by associations, where the revenue generated will be used to support the overall interests of the industry. If Bauma was concerned about supporting our industry, they could work with an industry association to provide some benefits to the industry of the investment made in Bauma.”

Eugen Egetenmeir, deputy managing director of Messe München, hit back at this claim, saying Bauma China pays its way to industry in contacts. “The exhibitor always pays very careful attention to which event gives him the best return on investment. Kickback models to industry play a subordinate role if the show doesn’t generate for the exhibitors those all-important new business contacts.”

Speaking about the decision to stage ConExpo Asia and Bauma China together in 2010, Egetenmeir said: “This cooperation is set to give yet another boost to international, and especially US, participation by exhibitors and visitors to Bauma China in Shanghai.”

“The Chinese market continues to offer vast opportunities for the construction industry and our members,” said AEM president Dennis Slater. “Our support of Bauma China is a major component of our global solutions-oriented services targeting the China and Asia marketplace.”

Messe München and AEM have already announced plans to stage the combined BC India – A Bauma ConExpo show in Mumbai, India in 2011. Egetenmeir and Slater said the Indian show would offer an international platform and benefit from their combined expertise.
