The new publication, a Best Practice Guide to Maintenance, Inspection and Thorough Examination of Tower Cranes, was launched on the first day of the SED show in Corby, England. Health and Safety Executive specialist inspector Ian Simpson explained that the guide was aimed at ensuring consistent best practice at tower crane sites.

CPA Tower Crane Interest Group chairman Syd Appleyard, said, “There were a lot of grey areas. The standards developed by by CPA working groups take these away: everything is there in black and white.”

Consultant Tim Watson, who worked on developing the standard, explained the contents of the guide, and recalled the development process: “The working group got on very well; It was a very enjoyable process, much easier than I imagined.”

Watson explained that two simple principles formed the basis of the guide: The consequences of failure of a tower crane are likely to be very serious, and, therefore, breakdown maintenance isn’t sufficient; a policy of planned, preventative, maintenance must be followed instead.
