CraneSTAR uses a Telematics Control Unit fitted to each monitored crane in order to log a number of data types, including major crane functions, operational data from the proprietary CANbus network or RS232 and the Load Moment Indicator. This is then transmitted to a secure database linked to a web server that can be accessed by any internet-ready device.

It uses a dual-band approach, meaning it is able to work on both GSM and satellite networks, to maximise its connectivity, with a global SIM card allowing data to be transmitted from anywhere in the world. This, Manitowoc said, is “a feature no other system in the construction equipment industry currently offers”.

“CraneSTAR gives customers up-to-date information on their crane fleet, no matter where they, or their cranes, are in the world,” said John Bittner, director of global marketing at Manitowoc Crane Care.

“It is the most comprehensive system our industry has ever seen and will help end-users get more out of their cranes. By monitoring working conditions and locations, customers can plan maintenance and lifting schedules to get maximum efficiency from their operations.”

Intermat takes place in Paris, France on April 20-25.
