Cummins Power Generation reports that over the past year it has supplied 40 generating sets to Finnish-based Konecranes VLC Corp to supply prime power for rubber tyred gantry cranes (RTGs). All of them were supplied by Cummins’ Finnish representative Machinery Oy.

Konecranes VLC, a subsidiary of KCI Konecranes, has delivered more than 1,000 harbour and shipyard cranes to customers in more than 40 countries since 1967. The RTGs are equipped with diesel generating sets and turnable rubber tyred wheels. All RTGs are modular custom-made units, with differing heights and spans varying from 22 to 28m.

Depending on the capacity of the RTG, Cummins is supplying a number of generating sets; among them the 403DFEC with a power rating of 400kW at 480V (60Hz) coupled to a Cummins 19-litre KTA19-G3 diesel engine, and the 322DFCC rated at 320kW at 480V (60Hz) is coupled with a 14-litre NTA855-G3 290 engine.

The Cummins sets are installed beneath the leg frame in a soundproofed enclosure meeting average 90dbA at 1m. The location is such that the generating set can be easily serviced from ground level.

The biggest single order for Cummins powered RTG¹s in the last year was from Surabaya in Indonesia, where a total of 12 units all with 1 over 4 lift heights and 28m spans were delivered. These cranes were all equipped with 280DFCC 290kW at 500V (50Hz) generation sets fitted with Cummins NTA855-G4 engines.

Over the last few years 21 units have been delivered to the Port of Charleston in the USA, all powered by generating sets equipped with Cummins KTA19 G3 engines.

Ten units have been delivered to the Maersk-Sealand USA operations in New Jersey, Norfolk and Houston; these units all had a 1 over 5 lift heights and a 21m span.

Other deliveries in the last year have been to Manzanillo in Mexico (four units), and six units to Panama.
