Cummins will launch four engines for EPA TIER 4 interim and EU Stage IIIB emissions regulations, including the QSX11.9 and QSX15 Heavy Duty models. All four will be on display as complete air intake-to-exhaust after treatment systems. This single system approach enables easier machine integration for OEMs, said Hugh Foden, executive director, Cummin’s off-highway business.

All four new engines will, “realise up to 5% higher fuel efficiency and improve productivity with faster engine response,” he said. The 11.9L and 15L QSX engines cover a 300hp to 600hp (224kW to 447kW) power band. Both include Cummin’s new XPI fuel system, which is able to inject a precise quantity of fuel at extra-high pressure up to 35,000psi (2400bar). The power and torque delivery are, “significantly faster to boost machine productivity beyond that of Tier 3 engines.”

The QSX11.9 and QSX15 Heavy-Duty models have a single Cummin’s variable geometry turbocharger, which continuously varies airflow boost to match engine rpm and load demands, and the new Direct Flow air cleaner with an integrated sensor to monitor temperature and pressure.

Both engines use cooled EGR to reduce oxides of nitrogen emissions by 45%, and both filter out 90% of particulate matter emissions.
